Extremely rare and of great historical interest
Lot 2043
INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Deccan). Satavahanas (Andhras). Satakarni I, with Queen Naganika, circa 1st century BC. AE (Bronze, 20 mm, 8.89 g). 'Naganikaya' within in the central tablet; around, 'Siri Satakanisa' (in Brahmi); in field to right, geometrical object. Rev. Four-orbed Ujjain symbol with a nandipadas in each angle. Reddy, Fig.13. Extremely rare and of great historical interest. An unusually complete and attractive example. Struck slightly of center, otherwise, very fine.

Naganika was the first queen on the Indian subcontinent to be named on coins. We also know her from temple inscriptions in Naneghat, who describe her as queen mother. We may presume from the numismatic evidence that she was the wife of Satakarni I, and the mother of Satakarni II.
